E-Watt Bulbs

FIRST founder, Dean Kamen, has recently designed and deployed a means for teams to raise money for building their robot: Light bulbs.

These bulbs are designed to be energy efficient and long lasting. The projected lifetime of these bulbs is about 10,000 hours, or 9 years at 3 hours a day. What is most surprising about these bulbs is the low amounts of power required: only 7 watts. Regardless, these light bulbs glow to 450 lumens, which is about the same lighting as 40W or 60W incandescent bulbs.

Team 3061 is selling these bulbs. In comparison to other light bulbs with shorter lifetimes, the average savings will be from $15 – $33. For more information on these bulbs, visit the FIRST website. If you are interesting in purchasing light bulbs, please contact us.

The above link to the FIRST website does work.

  2. Hi! We just moved to the western suburbs of Chicago from Silicon Valley in CA, where by daughter was on a FIRST lego team. She is in eighth grade and we have been searching high and low for robotics teams in the area. Do you have to go to Naperville HS to join Huskie Robotics? If yes, do you know how I might track a lego robotics team not associated with a school? Thanks very much in advance.

    • Hi! Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Right now, we only have students from Naperville high schools on our team: mostly Naperville North, but a couple from Naperville Central as well. However, there are a lot of FIRST teams in Chicagoland: maybe there’s one closer to you?

The link above lets you enter your zip code and find FIRST teams: you can search for Robotics or Tech Challenge teams and chances are, there should be one near you. If not, your daugher could try to start a team at her high school as well: This link should help with that!
      Good luck!
